A bicycle made for two. Yes, we’re ‘that’ couple now. We bought a touring tandem, happily named ‘Chewbicca’. We wanted a our tandem hand-built in the USA, so we saved up our pennies, sold off some bikes and had the Oregon based, Co-Motion build our first tandem frame.

The ‘Equator’ model is normally 700c tandem, but because we had the idea to take it to South America, we had the frame custom built to fit the 26″ wheels size – which still rules the (Wheel) roost in the developing world. The great thing about working with Co-motion is they can custom build bikes to any specification or to fit your needs.

To keep the cost down, we wanted to use utilize as many parts from our existing touring bikes as possible. We opted to use the Koga’s Rohloff speed hub, with one major difference, we would now be using a Gates Carbon belt drive system instead of chains. Fancy pants For easy transportation we chose to have couplers installed on the frame, once uncoupled the frame splits up into three parts making life a bit easier when transporting on airplanes.

2015 BUILD

To save a few bucks we robbed most of the components off the Koga World Traveller. With the help of my good friend, Dan, we had the bike in pretty much finished in a couple of days. A few tweaks and the addition of a third brake, Chewbika was set free on its maiden voyage….. around the park. Slowly, until Julie stopped screaming.
