A stones throw a way from the tourist friendly area of San Francisco lays the Tenderloin district. A stubborn, dilapidated district of the city. Fueled with gang violence, prostitution, and blatant drug use. Non-profit social service agencies, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and Single Room Occupancy hotels line the ragged and worn streets. All of this comes together to make this one of the most diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco. This maybe the reason why myself and my friend Roman took a week to photograph the everyday life of this gritty underworld, trying to get a glimpse, an understanding, why humans can be so self destructive.
